Manager's comments: Sadly what was the most stunning of fishing days turned out to be a huge disappointment in terms of fishing results.

Incredible weather first thing in the morning

The one fish that was landed was a lovely 18lber by Geoff B. Mark E did have a hold of a really good fish, estimated to be more than 30lbs, but after a 10 minute tussle the single hook broke just behind the eye. A huge disappointment on what was a tough day and could have been the fish of the week.

While it was a full on sunny day, did that really put the fish off that much? The only other theory was that the extremely cold and foggy day we had two days ago was simply not the right conditions for fish to want to enter the system and with them creeping so slowly through the river, perhaps we simply found ourselves in a barren patch on what was our last day. Interestingly, Murmansk chat on Saturday seemed to suggest that others rivers on the Kola had similar experiences.

Lunchtime barbecue at Lyliok

One of the day’s highlights was a barbecue lunch at Lyliok for Colin, Mark, Soren and Frank. Red Sergei cooked a sea trout to perfection which was washed down with something suitably cold. With no wind it felt really warm and there was no insect life to be seen! It was a definitely a moment to savour.

Soren and Frank had an amazing sighting down on Crow’s Nest in the afternoon. Soren was fishing from the bank when Old Sasha spotted a bear on the bank behind him. After some shouting and revving of the boat engine it transpired that the bear was definitely more nervous than the fishermen. It was a rare sighting indeed.

The river is continuing to drop and only patches of snow remain so those travelling in the rest of the season will hopefully get the run that we have been waiting for.
